El patrimonio cultural es la herencia que se trasmite a las generaciones presentes y futuras con el fin de preservar lo que se considera valioso para la historia de un pueblo, ya sea en su expresión material o inmaterial; es decir, aquello que almacena un conocimiento ancestral. En la concepción del patrimonio se manifiestan distintas temporalidades que pueden ser divergentes, convergentes o paralelas de acuerdo con las personas que lo habitan, al igual que en la novela de Ts’ui Pên que refiere Borges.
El presente volumen agrupa siete trabajos que entretejen estas temporalidades con el patrimonio y el turismo, explorando distintos ritmos, momentos y prácticas locales.La obra se ubica en territorio morelense y analiza las visiones y vivencias de la gente que ha visto modificarse su entorno como resultado del sustancial aumento del turismo en los últimos años. Los sitios patrimoniales tienen un atractivo cultural innegable y generalmente detonan las economías locales, regionales y hasta internacionales; las estrategias y políticas públicas dirigidas al fomento y desarrollo del turismo van aparejadas con complejas redes sociales, políticas y económicas que trascienden las fronteras locales y nacionales.

El arte indígena forma parte de las actividades religiosas, ceremoniales, sociales, productivas, familiares y comunitarias, sin embargo de manera frecuente, son menospreciados por la sociedad mestiza que no lo ve y que cuando lo hace se acerca para comprar lo que sin titubeo solicita con rebaja en el precio. La multiplicidad de fiestas, danzas, ceremonias y rituales mazahuas y otomíes que celebran durante todo el año, son espacios que permiten exhibir de manera elocuente el arte indígena en prendas, muñecas, vestuario, portales floridos en las iglesias, así como en la indumentaria femenina y masculina.
El texto de este libro pretende recuperar, reconocer y difundir la práctica del arte hecho objeto, el cual calificamos desde la mirada occidental como "artesanía", que contiene significados y significantes de ese otro mundo denominado indígena. La aproximación al tema es novedosa en tanto se aleja de los estudios clásicos de antropología y trasciende a otro enfoque centrándose, prioritariamente, en el tema de la sustentabilidad cultural, a partir de la urgente "necesidad de repensar y revalorar los aportes indígenas", en este caso los de orden cultural y de diseño.
