A partir del análisis de algunas secciones del Códice Borgia, presuntamente mixteco, la obra suma argumentos a la existencia de una literatura proso-semasiográfica en los códices mesoamericanos. Esta categoría existe a partir de la relación entre los elementos performativos de la lectura de estos manuscritos pictóricos y lo que está pintado/escrito en ellos. La importancia de esta perspectiva es regresar a un estado básico de los estudios literarios que abordan las distintas fases del periodo prehispánico en México y revisar algunos presupuestos. Existen evidencias arqueológicas que indican que tanto cazadores como pescadores fueron los primeros habitantes en México. Así, durante miles de años la producción pesquera permitió dar sustento a bandas itinerantes y pequeñas comunidades humanas que se establecían y quedaban particularmente protegidas cerca del mar abierto, es decir, sociedades humanas que se asentaban en las orillas de los esteros, caletas, barras, lagunas, desembocaduras de los ríos, etcétera. La presente investigación es una búsqueda exhaustiva de las artes y métodos de pesca en el México prehispánico. El uso y aprovechamiento de los recursos pesqueros como alimento son, entre muchos otros aspectos culturales, el resultado de lo bien representada que queda la cocina mexicana con base en el pescado. La investigación se llevó a cabo con la consulta de fuentes etnohistóricas, documentos actuales, revisión de la iconografía prehispánica y de todo aquello que implicara la mención escrita, o pictográfica, de los recursos pesqueros más comúnmente explotados en la región de Mesoamérica. Su aprovechamiento alimentario y vinculación con lo simbólico y ritual quedó plasmado en la iconografía, cerámica, escultura y pictografía, aun así poco se sabe de la pesca antigua en México. Sin embargo, el presente proyecto permitió hacer una recopilación que enriquece y postula el uso de redes, arpones y el buceo libre como los métodos de pesca que más frecuentemente se emplearon en México prehispánico, así como las variantes que pueden ser observadas en la actualidad.
