El argumento del libro es simple. No se puede abordar la variación fónica sin tomar en serio la teoría fonológica. Pero la teoría fonológica no proporciona respuestas sustantivas al problema del cambio. La fonología ayuda a definir el problema, pero deja la partida a medio jugar. ¿Por qué se producen los cambios? ¿Es azaroso el resultado obtenido? ¿Existen propiedades comunes entre los diferentes cambios? ¿Cómo es, en suma, el proceso de cambio? La teoría fonológica es una teoría casi desinteresada por el cambio fónico. El hilo conductor del libro es el problema del debilitamiento consonántico. La historia del debilitamiento se presta en especial a discusión que ahora interesa. La hipótesis es que cualquier aproximación unidimensional al problema del cambio fónico está condenada al fracaso. No hay un único rasgo que resuma fiablemente la larga historia de procesos complejos, ni un único nivel lingüístico que condense los hechos dispersos, ni una sola hipótesis fonológica satisfactoria en todo momento.
