La indagación partió del supuesto de que el Cerro Gordo jugó un papel destacado en la ubicación y orientación de la pirámide de El Cerrito, considerando que ésta era reflejo de aquél, pues evocaba al mítico Cerro Sagrado o Tonacatépetl. Asimismo, se tomaron en cuenta otros cerros con el propósito de ver su importancia en la disposición de otras estructuras que forman parte del sitio arqueológico. La importancia de los cerros estriba en que fueron utilizados como puntos de referencia para señalar las salidas o puestas del Sol en momentos que eran significativos para los antiguos constructores del sitio prehispánico. Estas fechas estaban vinculadas a fenómenos astronómicos, como solsticios, equinoccios, registros solares y pasos cenitales; o a eventos rituales asociados al calendario agrícola. En esta investigación se concluye que tanto el basamento piramidal como las otras estructuras arquitectónicas del sitio están dispuestas hacia las salidas o puestas del Sol, en fechas que eran de vital importancia astronómica y calendárica para el mundo mesoamericano.
