Esta investigación es un acercamiento sociolingüístico al habla de una red social de hombres gays mexicanos, donde se aborda la variación sociofonética, las actitudes y las creencias de los informantes sobre el habla gay; se explora también acerca de si esta forma de hablar puede ser identificada entre las personas heterosexuales. De igual manera, se investigó el habla de personajes televisivos "gays" mexicanos, con el fin de comparar el estereotipo del habla gay con el habla real de los informantes entrevistados. Los resultados permiten concluir que la comunidad gay es altamente heterogénea, que sí existen rasgos fonéticos que la caracterizan y que la población general identifica con relativa facilidad el habla gay.

El sistema de escritura maya puede describirse lingüísticamente como un sistema logosilábico, compuesto por signos que representan palabras completas (logogramas) y sílabas (signos silábicos –silabogramas– que pueden funcionar de forma silábica o vocálica). Hay aproximadamente 200 signos silábico-fonéticos diferentes, de los cuales cerca de un 60 por ciento son homófonos. Por tanto, hay cerca de 80 sílabas fonéticas en la lengua maya clásica y más de 200 grafemas silábicos en la escritura. Si se compara con otros sistemas de escritura mesoamericanos, parece claro que el empleado por los mayas era capaz de registrar estructuras lingüísticas tan complejas como la sintaxis presente en las manifestaciones orales de sus lenguas. En la práctica, en cambio, el sistema de escritura es el resultado de la abreviación grafémica de estructuras sintácticas altamente complejas, de manera que se requiere que los elementos que han sido omitidos se reconstruyan por los lectores familiarizados con el idioma de las inscripciones.
Este manual está dirigido a lectores principiantes y pretende ser una introducción concisa al tema de la epigrafía maya.

Los sacbé mayas, o "caminos blancos" elevados, a menudo se consideran de un sólo tipo, con un único propósito. En este primer examen sistemático de sus funciones, significados, arreglos y estilos de construcción, Justine Shaw revela que estas calzadas cumplían una variedad de funciones culturales y naturales. En esta obra, la autora presenta datos de campo originales recopilados en dos antiguos sitios mayas, Ichmul y Yo'okop. Ambos centros optaron por invertir enormes recursos en la construcción de calzadas monumentales durante una época de agitación social y política en el período Clásico Tardío. Shaw argumenta que ambos asentamientos utilizaron los sacbé como un método de integración social de la población más grande, diversa y dispersa de la región de Cochuah. Además, demuestra que el uso de los sacbé, junto con otras estrategias innovadoras, permitió que Ichmul y Yo'okop sobrevivieran a muchos de los difíciles cambios sociopolíticos y económicos de la época.
