La arquitectura de tierra siempre ha existido; es probablemente la expresión más temprana de la construcción permanente humana y continúa conformando los hogares de la mitad de la población mundial. Además, es el material predilecto de las grandes civilizaciones antiguas: Mesopotamia, Egipto, Valle del Indo, China, Los Andes y México, elaboraron sus primeros complejos monumentales en adobe y tierra apilada. A pesar de tan relevantes credenciales, la arquitectura de tierra sufre de un prejuicio profundo, asociado con la pobreza, insalubridad e inseguridad, en directa oposición con la piedra, material noble, símbolo social de riqueza, comodidad y permanencia. Esto ha llevado a los arqueólogos, historiadores del arte y arquitectos a desatender por mucho tiempo su investigación.
Este volumen es el primero de varios dedicados a la arquitectura mesoamericana de tierra. En él participan arqueólogos que tuvieron que formarse en campo en el estudio de arquitectura de tierra, por la necesidad de entender la complejidad y sofisticación de los edificios que iban estudiando en sitios que abarcan del Preclásico al Posclásico, desde San José Mogote hasta Tula.

Este segundo volumen es el resultado de un enlace cada vez más formal de investigadores trabajando en sitios de tierra del ámbito mesoamericano. Arqueólogos y otros especialistas, interesados específicamente en su arquitectura, sus sistemas constructivos y su tecnología, aplican métodos cada vez más avanzados para entender la organización sociopolítica de las sociedades que la erigieron.
La importancia de la investigación arqueológica se ha reflejado en una mayor participación en colectivos nacionales e internacionales interesados en la arquitectura de tierra como patrimonio cultural y como alternativa de construcción moderna. En los numerosos congresos temáticos, poco a poco se empieza a ver un diálogo entre los arquitectos, restauradores e ingenieros que trabajan desde los preceptos normativos modernos, los maestros artesanos poseedores de conocimientos tradicionales vernáculos y los arqueólogos que van revelando con su trabajo las técnicas y los sistemas constructivos que fueron olvidados con el paso del tiempo.

En este libro se expone el arte rupestre prehispánico e histórico presente en dos cuerpos lacustres del sureste de México, ubicados en la Selva Lacandona del estado de Chiapas que son Mensabak y Pethá, mismos que cuentan con una gran riqueza arqueológica. Se parte desde la arqueología de la identidad a través de las categorías de personhood, agencia humana, agencia no humana y peregrinaciones, que permiten entender el mundo-de-la-vida de los grupos mayas quienes produjeron el arte rupestre en un paisaje lleno de símbolos.
El análisis del arte rupestre maya presente en los riscos habla de un sistema de almacenaje simbólico que estuvo vinculado con la cultura popular maya; por lo que su estudio otorga voz y visibiliza a un sector de la población maya que había sido relegado por la arqueología monumental en el afán de búsqueda de grandes tumbas y palacios. No obstante, la monumentalidad de la arqueología presente en Mensabak y Pethá no radica en su arquitectura, sino en su paisaje relacional cuyo acercamiento requiere fundamentalmente de un giro ontológico.

El estado de Hidalgo tiene una rica historia cultural que viene desde la prehistoria, pero se define regionalmente en la época prehispánica. Con un pie en Mesoamérica y el otro en Aridoamérica (lo que corresponde a la Sierra Gorda, al noroeste) Hidalgo es el escenario de ricas culturas que dejaron su impronta en las poblaciones actuales que, en menor o mayor medida, conservan formas de vida tradicionales, muchas de las cuales están en riesgo debido al capitalismo homogeneizador.
Las formas de comer, vestir, trabajar y vivir definieron objetos que cumplían funciones tanto materiales como espirituales; muchos de ellos sobreviven y los llamamos artesanías.
