Esta situación degeneró en un catálogo de nombres muy reducido que produjo homonimia, o multitud de individuos con los mismos nombres; ante ello hubo la necesidad de usar un segundo identificador que facilitara la diferenciación. Esta función la cubrirían los apellidos. Con la llegada del hombre europeo al llamado Nuevo Mundo, la aplicación de ese sistema de apellidos gradualmente comenzó a exigirse como mecanismo de nominación entre los vasallos de los territorios recientemente conquistados. Los patronímicos son los apellidos que tienen "su origen en los nombres de pila del padre del portador" y hacen mención de la ascendencia del individuo (siempre al padre), generalmente mediante un sufijo, o prefijo, indicativo de tal circunstancia, expresado en la lengua de cada territorio. Tenemos así la terminación ez castellana; ejemplos: Fernández, González o Martínez. En el presente libro se ha tomado como norma general, para el uso del término patronímico, tanto para los nombres en idioma europeo como para aquellos en idioma náhuatl, todo aquel apellido que se transmite de padre a hijo, ya sea que aluda a un lugar, a un oficio, a un título, a un santo o a algún elemento asociado con la religión; así, el término "patronímico" se utilizó sólo en aquellos casos en los que puede constatarse que el nombre se transmitió de una generación a otra. En cuanto al término "apellido", se usó en contextos en los que funje como acompañante de un nombre de pila. El uso de la antroponimia nahua en el periodo colonial, en este caso en Tlaxcala, es un campo fértil para observar y explicar las dinámicas sociales generadas durante este periodo en el territorio que ahora es México.
