C.) del centro y sur de Yucatán fueron vistos durante mucho tiempo como excepcionales en muchos sentidos. Ahora sabemos que no inventaron la escritura ni los calendarios mesoamericanos, que fueron tan belicosos como otros pueblos antiguos, que muchas de las innovaciones en el arte y la arquitectura que se les atribuyen tuvieron orígenes diversos y que su “colapso” escrito no es lo que parece. Una afirmación excepcional persiste obstinadamente: los mayas eran ecologistas tropicales astutos que manejaban sus frágiles entornos tropicales de manera que sostenían poblaciones extremadamente grandes y densas y aún garantizaban la resiliencia y la sostenibilidad. Los arqueólogos suelen afirmar que las poblaciones mayas superaron con creces las de otras civilizaciones antiguas en el Viejo y el Nuevo Mundo. El gran centro de Tikal, Guatemala, ha sido fundamental para nuestras concepciones de la demografía maya desde la década de 1960. La revaluación de los datos de asentamiento originales de Tikal y sus implicaciones, complementada por muchas investigaciones nuevas allí y en otros lugares, permite una evaluación demográfica más modesta y realista. La población máxima del período Clásico probablemente fue del orden de 1.000.000 de personas.
