Éste es el tema de la presente obra. El recorrido da inicio con el entendimiento del deceso en el mundo animal y las infancias más tempranas, es decir, donde las complejas culturas que caracterizan a nuestra especie no se encuentran plenamente formalizadas. En el polo opuesto se construye una breve discusión acerca de la unidad y la diversidad de respuestas ante la muerte observables en las sociedades de las que se tiene registro histórico o etnográfico. Se discuten, también, las diferentes evidencias de conducta mortuoria y ritualidad que pueden encontrarse a lo largo de la evolución, desde la época de los australopitécidos, hace dos millones de años, hasta el Paleolítico Superior y el poblamiento de América. Lo que se nota reiteradamente es que, aun cuando esporádicamente puedan registrarse comportamientos rituales asociados al fallecimiento, éstos no parecen ocurrir sistemáticamente sino hasta los momentos en que se volvió más relevante la diferenciación social.
