Durante siglos, los conocimientos diversos desarrollados y mantenidos por grupos sociales considerados al margen de la sociedad recibieron la clasificación de conocimiento popular y conocimiento común, lo que marcó la distancia entre este conocimiento y el mundo de la ciencia. Este libro destaca, desde la perspectiva de la etnobiología, el potencial del conocimiento tradicional en la construcción de acciones sostenibles, reflexionando sobre posibles beneficios para la sociedad. Los autores ofrecen análisis e información sobre la contribución del conocimiento tradicional a la conservación de la biodiversidad, la seguridad alimentaria y la salud, a través del uso de plantas medicinales y otras prácticas nativas. El lector se dará cuenta de que, en muchos momentos, la imposición del mercado o la presión política no necesariamente condujeron a una mejora real en la dieta o la salud de la mayoría de la población, como en el ejemplo de los problemas derivados de la nutrición basada en alimentos industrializados.

Cancún nació como destino turístico hace 45 años. Ha llegado a convertirse en el principal polo turístico de sol y playa de México, con una captación de más de cuatro millones de turistas y una derrama económica superior a los cuatro mil trescientos millones de dólares. El modelo de desarrollo con el que se conceptualizó estuvo basado en un amplio estudio de capacidad de carga que evaluó la infraestructura necesaria, con una determinada cantidad de cuartos y un tamaño de población fija en el centro de población todo a un horizonte de treinta años. Fue la primera zona turística en contar con un plan maestro de desarrollo que daría vida a los Centros Integralmente Planeados (CIP) en México, con una visión innovadora para el momento, que contempló un polo turístico sustentable y equilibrado con oportunidades de empleo e inversión en armonía con el entorno natural. Sin embargo, el crecimiento acelerado y desordenado de Cancún lo ha llevado a enfrentar una situación que lo aleja de ser un destino turístico sustentable.

A partir del análisis de las transformaciones legales introducidas por el gobierno mexicano con la reforma laboral de 2012 que en buena medida vinieron a hacer legal lo que ya era práctica común, el libro estudia qué tipo de procesos de precarización se han producido en el trabajo turístico en México, cómo la subcontratación, los contratos por temporada y a prueba y el pago por hora, justificadas a causa de las elevadas tasas de desempleo y la necesidad de incrementar la productividad y competitividad de la economía mexicana. Con base en entrevistas a profundidad a trabajadores y trabajadoras de la isla caribeña de Cozumel, se describen los procesos de flexibilización laboral que se imponen en la industria turística favorecidos por los cambios legislativos. De este modo el libro pone de manifiesto cómo el empleo generado por el turismo en Cozumel está generando mayor precariedad, la cual a su vez es causante directa de más pobreza.
