Esta obra en dos tomos es el resultado de 30 años de investigación en la arqueología del centro de Veracruz. Aborda aquellos elementos emblemáticos que siempre se han asociado con la región: los estilos de volutas y las esculturas llamadas yugos, hachas y palmas, como expresiones de un mismo discurso simbólico relacionado con el ritual de decapitación y ligado al juego de pelota. Argumenta que desde el momento en que aparece este ritual, a inicios de nuestra era, se convierte en la base para la legitimación de las élites emergentes, y por lo mismo, en el principio organizador de las sociedades estatales de pequeño tamaño que se desarrollan a lo largo del primer milenio en gran parte de la costa del Golfo. Para ello, la autora retoma una anterior investigación en la que presenta los cambios en el patrón de asentamiento desde la prehistoria hasta el momento de la Conquista en la cuenca baja de Jamapa-Cotaxtla, planicie costera del centro de Veracruz, para argumentar que en las condiciones de abundancia que ofrece el trópico húmedo, la atracción del juego de pelota fue aprovechada por las élites para afianzar su poder. Proyectada a nivel mesoamericano, esta interpretación permite entender el prestigio del que gozó el centro de Veracruz durante el periodo Clásico y el impacto que tuvo su ritual como mecanismo político en otras civilizaciones contemporáneas como la teotihuacana y la maya.

Los textos aquí reunidos surgieron como parte de un simposio que se organizó con dos propósitos, primero, ofrecer una panorámica global sobre lo que se ha hecho en las últimas décadas acerca del tema de la prehistoria en México y, segundo, presentar un homenaje al profesor, colega y académico Joaquín García-Bárcena, quien además era profundo conocedor y referencia clave en este tema. En el libro se registran nuevas localidades y el reestudio de otras que aportan nuevos datos sobre los pobladores tempranos y los paleoambientes asociados en México, a ello se añade la aplicación de nuevas técnicas y enfoques: como las de ADN antiguo, los isotopos estables, las dataciones radiométricas y los estudios de fauna, que al combinarse con las practicas arqueológicas tradicionales, integran una perspectiva interdisciplinaria que ofrece mayores perspectivas de explicación científica a estos procesos. Este libro muestra que la prehistoria, como una de las tradiciones académicas más antiguas de la antropología mexicana, sigue vigente y se mantiene actual.

Como resultado de estudios teóricos, de campo y gabinete realizados diacrónicamente en el sitio arqueológico de Tamohi entre 1980 y 1998, este libro se enfoca exclusivamente en los últimos siglos de ocupación prehispánica (XV y la primera mitad del XVI), desde la perspectiva de difusión de la cerámica tipo Azteca III hasta la conquista española. Asimismo, se analiza el proceso de mantenimiento de la zona arqueológica de Tamuín, San Luis Potosí (única zona abierta al público). De modo que estamos frente a un trabajo que estudia las evidencias culturales y su comparación con otros asentamientos.

El Valle de Oaxaca se unificó bajo el dominio de Monte Albán alrededor del año 800 d.C. Partiendo de los hallazgos de las diferentes excavaciones hechas por John Paddock en el sitio arqueológico de Lambityeco –de 1961 a 1976–, los autores examinan la organización política y social de esta antigua comunidad durante la Fase Xoo (período Clásico Tardío). Centrándose sólo en este periodo arqueológico, es como la obra da cuenta de las cambiantes relaciones políticas que sostuvieron ambas ciudades, las cuales, de algún modo, llevaron a la caída del estado zapoteca. Es a partir de un análisis detallado de casas comunes y de élite, tumbas y artefactos asociados, como los autores demuestran el control político que Monte Alban ejerció sobre Lambityeco antes del abandono de ambos asentamientos.
Lambityeco es el sitio del período Clásico más minuciosamente investigado en el valle de Oaxaca después de Monte Albán, pero sólo se ha publicado un pequeño número de artículos resumidos sobre este importante lugar. Esto, en combinación con el estatus que se le asigna a Lambityeco como centro secundario —uno que permite una mayor comprensión de la dinámica del centro y la periferia en el estado de Monte Albán— hace que este libro sea una contribución significativa a la literatura sobre la antigua Mesoamérica.
