Este libro ofrece un modelo de análisis de la variación lingüística aplicado al español del Nuevo Mundo, particularmente a la variedad que se desarrolló en el Altiplano Central y en el Golfo de México, identificado aquí como Español Colonial Mexicano. El corpus lingüístico de ese periodo proporciona evidencia de (re) transmisión, difusión, conciencia metalingüística y variantes seleccionadas. El enfoque tridimensional en el que se basa este modelo destaca los datos lingüísticos de documentos coloniales auténticos que están conectados con relieves sociohistóricos de períodos o cruces particulares, que explican la variación del español y el resultado dinámico que conduce al cambio.
Después de cien años de estudio de la lingüística, este libro contribuye al avance de una nueva conceptualización de la diacronía, que se ocupa del desarrollo y la evolución a lo largo de la historia. La dimensión sociolingüística ofrece visiones del significante social y sus emocionantes vínculos con los movimientos sociales que provocaron un cambio radical de la identidad a través de la lengua, en este caso el español.

La presente publicación es el resultado del proyecto interdisciplinario <em>Europa y América en contacto: un estudio multidisciplinario de la transferencia intercultural en el Nuevo Mundo a través del tiempo</em>, mismo que se centró en el contacto lingüístico y cultural entre nahuas y españoles. Se trata de un diccionario contextual de palabras y frases prestadas, así como de combinaciones en náhuatl, que abarca datos desde la década de 1540 hasta 2016. Parte de una extensa base de datos que contiene una gran muestra de fuentes escritas coloniales, fuentes escritas modernas y entrevistas inéditas con hablantes de distintas variantes importantes del náhuatl moderno. Las fuentes escritas abarcan todos los géneros de la documentación antigua en náhuatl, como los anales, los relatos históricos y etnográficos, los diccionarios coloniales, piezas teatrales, canciones y textos doctrinales cristianos. La base de datos también contiene datos contextuales filológicos, etnohistóricos y antropológicos, que permiten mapear los desarrollos lingüísticos dentro de un contexto social más amplio. Las fuentes han sido examinadas en busca de préstamos, frases prestadas y combinaciones para que el diccionario pueda reflejar los usos de un término o expresión en todo el corpus analizado.

Con este volumen se pretende ofrecer un acercamiento en profundidad a las situaciones de contacto del español con otras lenguas para mostrar cómo las variaciones y cambios lingüísticos que se producen en dichas áreas forman parte de las dinámicas lingüísticas que caracterizan estas situaciones complejas. Se busca así analizar de manera general y sistemática distintos procesos de variaciones y cambio lingüístico, y explicitar los mecanismos que los han producido tanto en su dimensión diacrónica como sincrónica.
A partir del análisis comparado de datos reales de hablantes bilingües y monolingües de zonas de contacto, se intenta reflejar la capacidad de los hablantes para explotar la heterogeneidad lingüística y crear estrategias, aprovechando la plasticidad de los rasgos lingüísticos, que hagan emerger soluciones novedosas que los reorganicen, reutilicen o transformen en un diálogo constante con su contexto socio-identitario.

Aunque la palabra pluri- o policentrismo aún no figura en el Diccionario de la Real Academia Española, el concepto ya está integrado en la política lingüística panhispánica de las instituciones académicas. Según la RAE, "se consideran plenamente legítimos los diferentes usos de las regiones lingüísticas, con la única condición de que estén generalizados entre los hablantes cultos de su área y no supongan una ruptura del sistema en su conjunto". Sin embargo, a la hora de valorar en este sentido la variación lingüística del español, se termina el consenso y se abre la discusión. Este volumen ofrece un panorama amplio de las diferentes posiciones para saber qué se entiende exactamente por "pluricentrismo" en la teoría lingüística y hasta qué punto las normas ejemplares del español se elaboran y se modernizan sobre la base de este concepto.

Este volumen reúne diez contribuciones científicas que ofrecen un cambio de perspectiva sobre la descripción de los fenómenos de variación y cambio inducidos por el contacto en el mundo hispanohablante. Este cambio de perspectiva implica pasar del análisis de "sistemas" y "códigos" en contacto, y sus resultados, a la descripción y análisis de prácticas lingüísticas heterogéneas que se centran en el uso de recursos semióticos y lingüísticos por parte de los hablantes para expresar mensajes, transmitir conocimientos, o tomar posicionamientos epistémicos y afectivos, es decir, crear sentido. El objetivo de este libro es cuestionar, desde diferentes perspectivas y trasfondos, la noción de contacto como la simple influencia de sistemas o códigos y, más bien, proponer una visión dinámica centrada en el uso de recursos lingüísticos heterogéneos por parte de actores sociales que viven en entornos de contacto complejos que involucran el contacto de lenguas como el español, el quechua, el guaraní, el yukuna, el mapuche, el otomí, el chichimeca y el tepehuano.

Desde sus inicios, la fonología generativa ha supuesto que las diferencias entre las distintas lenguas sólo son variaciones –resultado de la elección de parámetros– en el interior de un esquema universal único. Esta obra es una prueba de ello; con base en el estudio de la lengua zoque, muestra que sus procesos fonológicos están gobernados por principios y parámetros de la Gramática Universal. En sus páginas se entrelazan los estudios morfológico y fonológico de la lengua, el primero desde la perspectiva de la teoría de X barra y el segundo desde los postulados actuales de la fonología no lineal. La autora muestra que los procesos flexivos y los derivacionales tienen lugar en un léxico estructurado en estratos y que las representaciones geométricas de los segmentos no son un mero dispositivo descriptivo, sino explicativo de los procesos. En su totalidad, la obra ofrece interesantes soluciones: representa una aportación, tanto en el conocimiento de la lengua zoque, como en las discusiones teóricas actuales.

Este libro ofrece la primera traducción al español del único diccionario de la lengua tarahumara producido durante la época colonial que perdura hoy en día, así como el primer análisis detallado de su contenido. Perteneciente a la familia lingüística yuto-nahua, la lengua tarahumara es hablada en el norte de México por más de 80,000 personas, quienes se refieren a su idioma y a sí mismos como Rarámuri. El diccionario, escrito en alemán, fue compilado por el jesuita moravo Matthäus Steffel y está basado en su experiencia como misionero entre los tarahumaras durante los años de 1761 y 1767. El libro incluye traducciones y transcripciones de las dos versiones existentes del diccionario. Estas se complementan por capítulos analíticos y apéndices que facilitan el uso de los datos que contienen e indican el valor de la obra para la investigación lingüística y antropológica moderna.
